Evolving Villains

As I described earlier in my second blog "What makes a Great Villain?", Disney villains are iconic figures in film. They not only have amazing outfits and comical henchmen, but are also masterminds when coming up with schemes and dastardly plots to ruin the protagonist “once and for all”. Since the beginning of Disney’s film empire, they have followed similar guidelines when designing their villains. For instance, most films designate who the villain is from the start by either having them create the conflict early on or they show them scheming to take down the protagonist. This happens in films such as The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and even 101 Dalmations. But now, Disney has changed up their typical routine villain design and has created this new-age villain, where the villain doesn’t typically reveal their true self until the end of the movie. One of the most well-known examples of this is Prince Hans from Disney’s Frozen. When Hans is first introduced, he and Anna literally bump into each other (in the cutest way possible) and the audience assumes that he is her prince charming. As the movie progresses, Hans shows no signs of evil or villainy when Elsa runs off and Anna rushes to find her, which just throws the audience off even more once he reveals his true intentions at the end to Anna. He even left to find Anna after it was only her horse that returned to Arendelle and saved Elsa’s life from the Duke’s evil henchmen. The only hint that Disney gives about Hans’ true identity is in his song with Anna, “Love is an Open Door”, where he says “I was thinking the same thing! 'Cause like I've been searching my whole life to find my own place…”.
Here is where many viewers believe that Hans gave a little away about his plans to take over Arendelle, but for those who have never seen the movie before, it’s just another line in a song. Many argue that Hans is one of the most sinister and evil villains in Disney history because his reveal was such a surprise and scandal. In a review from The Atlantic about Frozen, they describe Hans as a “greedy, throne-usurping would-be killer”. When he leans in to kiss and save Anna, viewers are led to assume that the movie is about to end and all will live happily ever after (although the whole involvement of Kristoff would be very confusing). But, everything collapses once he says “Oh, Anna, if only there were someone who loved you.” I still remember watching this scene for the first time in theatres with my cousin, and we both gasped. I guess a part of me was a little relieved, though, when I realized that Hans was the villain because I loved Kristoff and Sven so much that I didn’t want them to be just left out “in the cold”. For an alternate view, an article from the website Cracked wrote about how Hans isn’t really the villain, but how it was actually the trolls who masterminded the whole surprise at the end by changing Hans’ mind so that Anna and Kristoff would be together. With Disney constantly evolving and changing, it only makes sense that they would want to change up their characters too, but does this mean that they might alter the way they design other things in their movies? I guess we will have to wait and find out.

Disney Dogs

If you haven't realized it by now from my blogs, I love dogs. They are the sweetest and most caring animals, and are WAY better than cats in every aspect, in my opinion. I am convinced that most Disney animators and writers are "dog people" as well because they almost always portray dogs in this same light, super caring and always good. Many of the heroes/protagonists in films actually own a dog, like Prince Eric and Max, Wendy and Nana from Peter Pan, or Carl and Doug from Up. Cats, on the other hand, are usually evil in Disney films. Their owners are typically the villain and they go around terrorizing the protagonist and their sidekicks. For instance, in Cinderella, the cat is literally named after the devil, Lucifer, and Bruno, the dog, is the hero because he saves Cinderella from being locked in her room by chasing Lucifer away. All in all, I believe that Disney loves dogs just as much as I do, and I love that they portray them in such a positive way.
I found this Buzzfeed quiz that tests your knowledge about Disney dogs, and like the dog-lover that I am, I of course immediately clicked it. If some of your favorite Disney characters are dogs, then I highly recommend testing your knowledge on this difficult quiz. Enjoy !

What Movie Would You Star in?

Everyone knows that taking BuzzFeed quizzes is addicting. You start off with just one, and the next thing you know, an hour has passed by and all you've learned is that somehow your astrology sign can predict when you will get married, what dessert you would be, and what kind of dog you would be based on your favorite color. Even though most of these quizzes make no sense, they are still fun and amusing. Well, the next time you find yourself going down the BuzzFeed rabbit hole, check out this quiz that can predict what movie you would be in based on your ratings of 15 sidekicks. I have looked at and written about a lot of sidekicks this year and how they are vital to the main characters development, so when I saw this quiz, I was hooked. I hope you enjoy taking it as much as I did!

Disney Princess Medley

Like a good medley? I came across this compilation by Georgia Merry on YouTube, and its phenomenal. Its her take on twelve Disney princess songs, and its truly magical. She even dresses up as them with wigs, makeup, clothes, and more. After watching her video, I saw that she actually makes many Disney mashups and they are all super creative and very entertaining. If you have a few minutes to spare, I definitely advocate watching this video. Enjoy!

I love Sven if you didn't already know :)

Here are my honest reactions and thoughts to watching Disney's Frozen:
  • This music really gets the viewer into the mood of the setting. I love it!
  • This soundtrack is phenomenal. It makes sense that it won so many awards
  • I think the song “Frozen Heart” doesn’t get enough credit, it's so good !
  • AH BABY SVEN
  • Little Ana was so dramatic, “The skies awake, so I’m awake.”
  • I forgot, but why was it that only Elsa was given Ice powers?
  • Next question, what happens after they finish playing in the snow that Elsa had made in their house? Is she able to clean it up as easy as she can make it?
  • Why is little Kristoff wandering around by himself at night?
  • For a king, he sure isn’t the brightest when it comes to caring for his daughter. Locking her up and keeping her from human contact makes everything that much worse because then she is constantly aware of her powers and the dangers she could bring.
  • The most iconic door knocks EVER
  • “conceal it, don’t feel it, don’t let it show.” Wow, another example of terrible parenting
  • I remember reading about a conspiracy that says their parents were also Tarzan’s parents, who washed up after a ship wreck and was then sadly attacked by a tiger.
  • I’m very impressed that Ana has held onto wanting to be with her sister for so long. By this time, many people would’ve just accepted that she wasn’t going to come out and moved on
  • Gosh, I wish I had a sister
  • MORE SEAGULLS ah the parallels are crazy
  • Ok, I love my dog, but I wouldn’t eat slobbered covered food from him
  • The Duke of Weseltown is so slimy
  • I am Ana waking up in the morning haha
  • I love how Disney doesn’t try to portray the princess as perfect in everything, it shows their evolvement
  • Their port looks very similar to the one in The Little Mermaid
  •  AH RAPUNZEL SPOTTED
  • They portray horses pretty much the exact same way in all their movies. For instance, Hans’ horse is almost identical in features and characteristics to Maximus from Tangled
  • GOSH if I didn’t already know how much of a slim bag Hans was, he would be one of the best princes Disney made. So sweet
  • I love their outfits
  • What the heck…. What are his dance moves? I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in a while hahahah. I can only imagine the voice actor trying not to break character while recording this
  • In the midst of Elsa trying to help Ana, she’s really hurting her
  • Notice how Hans talks about finding a new place and not really about her in the song “Love is an Open Door”
  • Ouch, put it to her Ana
  • Whoop, that backfired. Maybe Ana should’ve been a bit nicer
  • The most overplayed and catchy song ever has started …
  • LET IT GOOO LET IT GOOOOOO
  • Although this had to be very traumatizing for Elsa, it definitely allowed her to become her best self
  • The most iconic braid ever
  • So much sass, “the cold never bothered me anyway.”
  • “yoohoo, big summer blowout!”
  • hahahah Kristoff’s reaction to hearing about Ana’s engagement is great. How does she not see how weird it is?
  • ANOTHER PARALLEL ! wolves in Frozen and Beauty and the Beast
  • Sven is so adorable
  • Josh Gad is a comedic genius
  • Hahhahaha “who’s the funky looking donkey over there?” “That’s Sven.” “Uh huh, and who’s the Reindeer?”
  • Honestly, I would want to “burst Olaf’s bubble” too, just as Kristoff does. Is that terrible?
  • Wow I dislike Weseltown soo much
  • “Oh, look at that, I’ve been impaled.” Again, another example of the brilliance that is the writers
  • I know I’ve said this many, many times already, but I love Sven
  • I think the scene where Kristoff introduces Ana to his family and they are still in rock form is the best scene out of the entire movie. Their faces are priceless
  • This is my favorite song out of the entire movie. “What’s the issue dear? Why are you holding back from such a man?”
  • Poor Elsa. I am a bit confused as to why she didn’t think to find someone to help her though.
  • NO Kristoff, stay!
  • Hans is an iconic character even though he’s a terrible person. He’s one of the first villains in a Disney movie to not be introduced initially as evil. He instead is introduced with the assumption that he is to be the heroic prince figure that Ana is destined to be with.
  • He really thinks he can get away with this? Killing a queen and a princess just so he can be a ruler? How is that not suspicious?
  • Go Kristoff Go! Save Ana!
  • “Love is putting someone else’s needs before yours…” beautifully put, Olaf
  • I’m glad Elsa isn’t bothered by the cold because wearing an off the shoulder dress in that storm is just plain stupid
  • NOOO SVEN !!!
  • Oh, wait, he’s ok. Phew
  • I’ve never cried watching Ana freeze before, but I’m getting a little teary eyed, not going to lie
  • AH YES SISTERLY LOVE.
  • I love how Disney made the act of true love between sisters and not between a prince and princess. Although love can be “planted” initially by meeting someone, true love is cultivated over time and that’s what Ana and Elsa’s love is.
  • Wow Sven is the cutest
  • WAY TO GO ANA!! I’m glad someone punched him
  • Honestly, after the “eternal freeze” they just had, I’m surprised everyone wanted Elsa to make an ice rink and have it snow again

Are you a Disney Animal lover?

Who is your favorite Disney animal? Is it Pongo from 101 Dalmatians? Sebastian from The Little Mermaid? Or maybe it's Sven, from Frozen? My favorite animals have to be Sven, Max from The Little Mermaid, Nana from Peter Pan, and Louis from Princess and the Frog. Now, don't get me wrong, I love watching Mushu and the cats in The Aristocats, but there's something about Disney dogs/animals that act like dogs (Sven) that I am more drawn to. Well, if you have a favorite Disney animal, then that must mean that you have seen enough Disney movies to be able to pick one! In this BuzzFeed quiz, it asks you to name several Disney animals that are in the range from easy, to quite hard if you aren't a very devoted Disney fan. I took it and got most of them right, so it's not impossible, but its still challenging, especially near the end. I definitely recommend trying it and seeing if you are, in fact, and avid Disney animal lover.

"Zootopia's" irony is too good

These are my honest thoughts and reactions to watching Disney’s Zootopia:

  • Why is the beginning so creepy?
  • This is the cutest and most disturbing performance I’ve ever seen
  • “We gave up on our dreams and we settled.” Wow great parenting
  • Be ambitious little bunny, don’t let your sad parents tell you otherwise
  • Oh gosh I struggled with just two siblings, imagine having 275, goodness
  • Gideon needs someone to whoop some sense into him. Gosh I would’ve kicked him hundreds of more times if I were Judy
  • YES JUDY way to go
  • This scene where she is leaving her family is going to make me tear up a little, not gonna lie
  • Whoa she has an IPod
  • This Shakira song is very catchy
  • I love all the details Disney puts into these movies. Even remembering how windows fog up in the cold is amazing
  • I think I’d want to live in the rainforest district because I like the greenery and rain
  • The parallels and meaning to race in this movie is done very well. It’s interesting how they added the part about “only bunnies being able to call each other cute”
  • Oh goodness she needs to watch for this fox, there is definitely something off about him
  • Shout-out to the American dream
  • Come on Judy you haven’t listened to anyone’s opinions so far, why care about this one?
  • It’s funny how true it is that, depending on whatever mood you’re in, that type of music is playing on the radio so you can’t escape it
  • Her parents are real drags
  • This is your chance! Get him Judy
  • I don’t know if I’m just in an emotional state right now, but I almost teared up again listening to Mrs. Otterton’s story about her husband being missing
  • I LOVE assistant mayor Bellwether, always coming in to save Judy at the best times
  • “Even though I’m just a dumb bunny, we are good at multiplying.” comedic genius
  • The irony is too good when they made the DMV workers sloths
  •  I love how they play each other (Judy and Nick)
  • Oh, I remember Mr. Big! Loved him and his Godfather-like qualities
  • I know I’ve said this many times about movies, but this storyline is great and the writers are incredible. Animals turning to savages huh
  • Gosh the driver seemed so nice why did he have to pull this number on them and go savage
  • Watching the relationship between Nick and Judy grow is adorable. They are perfect for each other and they don’t even realize it
  • Not at all suspicious, just a creepy building with men dressed in black guarding it
  • GEEZ that tiger came out of no where
  • YAY she found him!!
  • Oh, spoke too soon. She found him, but the savage half of him
  • Why didn’t she have anyone debrief her about what to and not to say in a press conference? Because that did not go well
  • And as Nick guessed it, she went back home and became a carrot farmer
  • Now what nick missed was that she went home, but came back better than ever
  • Oh my gosh “Pig hero 6” “wrangled” and “wreck-it Rhino”
  • As a Duke fan, I think it was brilliant to make the bad guys rams (like UNC)
  • I would say that making the mayor the real bad guy is a twist, but she was bound do revolt in some way against the way she was treated. Classic Disney move
  • AH THAT WAS GREAT “It’s called a hustle sweet heart.”
  • Those recording pens have saved countless protagonist lives in movies
  • YAYYY the Ottertons are united this is so sweet
  • I must’ve jinxed myself saying I wasn’t surprised because I was not expecting Flash as the speeding driver!!
