Thought of the (Tues)day

Here are some photos of my family's Disney trip back in 2003! My dad had a business conference at Disney World and decided to take the family (well, all but one. My youngest brother did not come because he was too young to appreciate the wonder of Disney).

In this photo, I am posing with the hilarious Timon from The Lion King, and if you can't tell from my face, it was a magical moment.

My parents really wanted Josh, my brother, and me to get the full Disney experience when we went, so they bought us all sorts of souvenirs. Shirts, hats, shoes, you name it, we most likely have it or almost bought it. Included in our souvenir pile were autograph books for the characters to sign. You can see us grasping our books as we get excited to add Goofy's signature to our autograph collection.

Of course, we had to get a family picture taken with the one and only Eeyore. I think I was the most excited, besides my mom, to meet Eeyore because he was just so sweet and was definitely one of my favorite characters in Winnie the Pooh

Which is your favorite Disney song?

Is it "I'll Make a Man Out of You" from Mulan

"Let it Go" from Frozen

"Hakuna Matata" from The Lion King

"How Far I'll Go" from Moana

"Kiss the Girl" from The Little Mermaid

or "I See the Light" from Tangled

(I am honestly conflicted between Tangled and Mulan)

Disney Mash-Up

I don't know if this applies to everyone, but whenever I hear a Disney song, any song, I immediately stop what I am doing at the moment and start singing and dancing. This is especially true with the song "I'll make a man out of you" from Mulan. Here is a mash-up by the talented Todrick Hall of the "Evolution of Disney". It is honestly amazing and I recommend 100% listening to it!

Broken slipper? no problem

·      Here are my honest reactions and mental commentary to the film, Cinderella
  •     Just from the opening credits, you can tell how much time and effort went into making this film. The art and music grab you and enchant you from the beginning.
  • ·      Question: How do I become friends with cute little blue birds and have them wake me up? Because that sounds so much better than my current alarm clock situation
  • ·      This actress who plays Cinderella has a timeless voice. It is gorgeous and listening to her sing “A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes” makes me feel just as entranced as the animals are.
  • ·      YES JACQUE MY FAVORITE!!
  • ·      Did she really just say “kill joy”? Hahaha
  • ·      Serious question though: how do I become friends with these animals? They can make beds, give a bath, and even dress you!
  • ·      She must have some major calve muscles if she has to go up and down those stairs every day
  • ·      OH I completely forgot how Gus Gus was introduced! Jacque and he are my favorites
    •    Also, never knew his real name was Octavius. How does Gus come from that?
  • ·       Gosh their house is gorgeous. Reminds me of the castle in Frozen
  •       EWWWW Lucifer!! Not a cat fan. It’s very ironic and fitting that they named him after the devil himself. He even walks like he owns the place, stupid cat
    •     Aww little Gus Gus is so cute saying that he wanted to beat up Lucifer. I would put my money on him.
  •       I forgot that there was a dog in this movie!!! Bruno is adorable!! There is a reason they portray dogs as sweet and adorable versus cats as conniving and evil à it’s because that’s how they are in real life!!

  • *Me when someone tells me to like cats*
    •     I had the exact same reaction Bruno did when Cinderella told him to like cats. A face that says, “haha you’re kidding right? Ew no way!”
    •     It also says a lot about cats when even Cinderella, the sweetest girl, can’t say anything nice about them. “Hmm, there must be something good about him.”
  • ·      Aww poor Jacque, please don’t get caught by Lucifer!
  • ·      Poor Gus he didn’t deserve to be beaten up by those darn chickens! Wait, oh no, LEAVE THE FOOD GUS!!
  • ·      If someone yelled at me and rang a bell at the same time that much I would not be able to take it. I don’t know how she can be so nice to them.
  • ·      Gosh I would slap Anastasia, and then I would run away from all those darn chores that evil stepmother assigned
  • ·      I have noticed that Disney portrays all of their kings the same way: much older, has a peculiar assistant/advisor, wants their child to marry as soon as possible, and all have the same deep, kind voice
  • ·      Oh no, they have ruined the song sweet nightingale … wait, yes Cinderella you show them how to do it!
  • ·      Gosh these girls are annoying as hell. Cinderella deserves at least one-night off
  • ·      I forgot about this song!!!! “Cinderellie Cinderellie”
    •     Ok seriously, how do I find some of these animals?! They make dresses now!
  • ·      I love how the mice have this little accent that ends all their words in “-ie”
  • ·      Evil, evil Lucifer at it again! He just needs to be put in a cage and call it a day
  • ·      That was super nifty of Jacque to use Gus Gus’ tail to string beads
  • ·      “happy birthday” haha this is why I love Gus Gus
  • ·      NO STOP THAT! I would’ve gone full Mayweather on those stepsisters, I don’t know how Cinderella has taken them and their bratty behavior for this long
  • ·      How has she not noticed that she’s now crying on a woman’s lap?
  • ·      Disney portrays a lot of characters the same in most movies, I’ve noticed. All their fairies are sweet, older women and all their kings are older, and have a bit of a temper.
  • ·      “Ah, now, well the first thing you need is” *Cinderella looks at dress* “A pumpkin” *Cinderella makes face that says,” I’m sorry, a what now?”*
  • ·      “Bibbity Bobbity Boo” – a classic song

  • ·      YES you go Gus Gus!! Great timing on the fairy Godmothers part turning him into a horse just at the right time to scare Lucifer off
  • ·      Cinderella has the greatest expressions. When the fairy godmother finally realized her dress was in tatters, she just shakes her head like,” mhhm, I was trying to tell you.”
  • ·      Gosh I wish I had a fairy godmother to dress me up in gorgeous gowns all the time
  • ·      Has the fairy godmother been rhyming this entire time? Wow, I’m impressed
  • ·      The one thing I dislike about this movie is the unrealistic expectations it gives you. Where is my prince who sweeps me off my feet and sings to me?
  • ·      What happened to this type of music? It’s gorgeous and so much better than all the pop and rap crap of today
  • ·      Aww Cinderella, ignorant girl, why didn’t you tell him your name? you were with the most attractive man for hours and never thought to tell him your name?
  • ·      Question: how does a shoe made of glass not break under one’s weight?
  • ·      STOP IT, BAD STEPMOTHER DON’T YOU DARE LOCK HER IN!
  • ·      Of course Lucifer had to get in on the trouble and attack Gus Gus
    •     WAIT brilliant idea Cinderella! YAY Bruno! Another example of dogs being way better than cats. Adios Lucifer!
  • ·      I love how even the Duke doesn’t like the stepmother and her daughters. “I hope, I mean, I presume there are no more maidens in this household?”
  • ·      Stepmother strikes again, tripping the already beaten footman and breaking the darn shoe!
    •     Best expression of the movie yet is seeing Cinderella’s face while she pulls out the other shoe and then looks at her stepmother, who is in total shock. Just wonderful.

  •     The wedding was beautiful, as expected, but I am still upset at Disney for giving young girls (aka me) such high expectations for men. If I receive anything less than a royal ball and being swept off my feet while dancing, then I will be disappointed haha.

Max is definitely better than Prince Eric

These are my (very) random thoughts and reactions as I watched The Little Mermaid:
  • Eric is very cute, but nowhere near as cute as Max, the dog
  • Sebastien and Eric’s butler have super similar personalities, I guess kings just like that type of person to hang around them
  •  I love Sabastian and the band
  •  how old is Ariel and flounder supposed to be?? Oh wait they just said it, she is 16
  • Oh no, anxiety please don’t go in that ship Ariel, there could be sharks
  •  I called it !! I’m with flounder, no sharks for me, NOT TODAY
  •  *shark swims by* NOPE SORRY ARIEL IM OUTTA HERE
  • I have noticed that red eyes emphasize the terror they are trying to portray
    •  But you know what else has red eyes? snakes, some vicious rabbits, rats, SATAN
  •  this shark attack scene really reminds me of the one in finding nemo, sunken ship, escaping through little hole, etc.– inspiration?
  • ·      Love scuttle, he is so funny, reminds me of a crazy, sometimes drunk, old uncle or relative that no one really knows how they are related to
  • ·      Eww creepy eels (flotsum, jetsum), whoop here’s Ursula! her voice is deeper than I remember
    • Although she is evil/complains about being starved and such, she still has makeup and accessories to make her look good – reminds me of southern grandma or 1920s club flapper dancer
  •  Close out on Ursula with focus on eyes à eyes seem to be a big part in movie (eels glowing eyes, red shark eyes, etc.)

  • ·      Flounder is the friend we all want that will stick up for us even when we deserve the punishment – stereotypical boy who hasn’t gone through puberty or is in the process
  • ·      Poor Sebastian doesn’t realize when to shut up – gets assigned to watch Ariel, karma?
  • ·      I don’t think I realized this but Sebastian is really passionate about music – he’s a composer, and I don’t think I put it all together until now- the songs he sings and everything
    • I think when I was younger I didn’t think much into his composing and such, I just thought he was the designated dude for that but really his position at court is composer and advisor
  • ·      The songs in this movie are wonderful: “The girl who has everything, look at this trove, treasures untold, how many wonders can one cavern hold? … Sure, she’s got everything, I’ve got gadgets and gizmos of plenty, I’ve got whosits and whatsits galore, you want thingamabob’s? I’ve got twenty…”
  • ·      This may be where my over usage of the word thingamabob came from, hmm
  • ·      If she is learning all of her human words from scuttle, how does she have some of them right? Like where did she learn the words street, fire, legs, and burn?
  • ·      Gosh I wish my hair looked like that underwater, instead of just a wet tangled noodle
  • ·      Ironic because she thinks men don’t reprimand their daughters on land when really it’s the opposite
    • Def a little bit of women’s support in here “bright young women, sick of swimming, ready to stand”
  • ·      Is flounder making that sad face because he wishes Ariel could have her dream of being on land? Or is he sad that she wants to leave so bad and she isn’t realizing that he can’t go with her and that he might lose her?
  • ·      “Ariel what is all this” “ugh it’s just my collection” - well that doesn’t sounds sketchy
  • ·      I’m the person who sits in the corner and pets max (the dog) at parties, so watching the dog run around and not having people pet him and dancing instead makes me sad
  • ·      Ariel lucked out 1) seeing Eric’s boat and 2) seeing Eric because most sailors are anywhere near as hot as he is
  • ·      I love Grimsby’s pettiness, I can relate with it
  • ·      Aww someone please help poor max. he’s the real star of the show
  • ·      Yes, Eric you save that ship !
  • ·      NOOO MAX DON’T WORRY ERIC IS COMING
  • ·      Dangit Eric, why did u have to get stuck like that … Wait wait yes ariel way to save him
  • ·      I will admit though that it is creepy that she is just staring at him
  • ·      Question: how long can a mermaid stay out of the water?
  • ·      Yesss max you are ok!! That’s all that really matters honestly (If it’s not obvious yet, I love dogs)
  • ·      Wait, wait, here comes the iconic moment ... yep cue the wave and Ariel’s gorgeous flowing hair
  • ·      I will give it to Ursula that she has mastered the evil laugh
  • ·      UNDER THE SEA!! Darling its better down where its wetter, take it from meeee
  • ·      Sebastien is so talented gosh
  • ·      Uh oh flounder I think is a bad influence, taking Ariel away from her life lesson concert
    • Ohhhhh I see why he took her away, ugh flounder is friend goals

  • ·      When I was little, this scene of King Triton destroying everything made me furious. But now that I’m older, I understand and probably would’ve done the same thing (well maybe not to that extent, but I would’ve punished her)
  • ·      Ursula is definitely the typical southern grandmother. Red lips and everything
  • ·      I hear a song coming along … POOR UNFORTUNATE SOULSSS
  • ·      Ok pausing the song, when she brings up the example of the two mer-people who came to see her (aka unfortunate souls) (the man was skinny and the girl was fat), I can see where Disney needed to fix their views a bit. But, there is the point that Ursula is evil and should be expressing the wrong views
  • ·      Ursula making Ariel decide between her family and a crush/love …  and is telling her that personality (her voice) is not as important as her looks and “body language” à I mean I guess since she’s evil it makes sense for her values to be messed up
  • ·      Another example of red eyes being creepy à during the process of Ariel changing, Ursula’s eyes turned red
  • ·      Ariel has to be so confused having legs now
  • ·      Aww Sebastian finally realized how special Eric is to her, way to go Sebastian
  • ·      Dangit Eric, even Max knows it’s her!! proof that Max is the real MVP
  • ·      Oh no Ariel that dingelhopper is not what u think it is, please put it down
  • ·      Go Sebastian Go!! you beat that murderous chef
  • ·      Aww Eric is falling in love with her …. but I do see a trend they are portraying that looks are very important when trying to get a guy (Sebastian says so, Ursula says so, etc.)
  • ·      Poor triton, don’t feel bad, you were just parenting her and she took it wrong (he did lose his temper though so there is that)
  • ·      I love this outfit on Ariel. She looks great in blue
  • ·      Omg when Ariel was driving Eric’s face was priceless
  • ·      Oh no, someone please stop Scuttle from singing, where is AH yes Sebastian u save that mood
  • ·      The most iconic song ever: Kiss the Girl
  • ·      PLEASE ERIC KISS HER, DO IT
  • ·      Wow. Probably one of the saddest moments ever when the boat tipped. Almost as depressing as Mufasa dying
  • ·      Go get her Eric go get… ugh no bad Ursula you’re cheating by putting him under that spell
  • ·      I would’ve slapped Eric right then and there for leading me on, that butthole
  • ·      Hmm maybe scuttle is useful...
    • he’s so funny “am I ever wrong… I mean when its important “ hahaha

  • ·      Omg she did not just kick max. OH HELL NO!  If I was Eric and saw that, I would’ve been like Nope, we done!
  • ·      Literally just got chills watching Eric and Ariel get together, but of course bad old Ursula has to get in the way
  • ·      And back where it all began, on a boat
    •  Oof wait that hurt, oh well goodbye Ursula!
  • Yes, Ariel work that dress! Gosh I wish I looked that good coming out of the water

You Do You, Villains

I believe Tom Hiddleston, who portrays the villain Loki, in Thor, said it best when he described the nature of villains, “If you look at all of the villains in the course of human history, they’ve all believed, delusionally, in their virtue of their actions – every villain is a hero in his own mind.” (Tom Hiddleston). Villains are notorious for their garb, sidekicks, and evil lair, but they are infamous for their rotten plans. Drawn from their “enduring evil character”, villains come up with the most outrageous of ideas, from trying to turn their king into a llama just so they can rule the kingdom (Yzma from Emperor’s New Groove), to kidnapping a child so that they may live a youthful life forever (Mother Gothel in Tangled). Whatever the motive may be, villains are always portrayed as instinctively or inherently evil. But what if one of these villains aren’t actually evil to the core, and are instead driven by something that happened to them in the past, and the only response they see fit is in violence? Priscilla Kiehnle Warner tackles this proposal in her essay Fantastic Outsiders: Villains and Deviants in Animated Cartoons, where she also addresses how and why villains are portrayed the way they are in cartoon films.

“Creators do not show villains becoming involved in deviant behavior through social processes or the influence of structural factors. The deviance “theories” implicit in cartoons are, at heart, biological or psychological rather than sociological.” Warner claims that, in cartoon films, villains are not given the proper backstory like the heroes are receiving because they want all their villains to “derive everything from their enduring evil character”. In some ways, I can see why they portray them in this light because they are only children’s cartoons, and there might not be enough time to give a detailed description of the villain, or even if there was, kids wouldn’t appreciate it as much as, say, an adult hero movie. But, I do think having background helps the viewer understand the villains better, understanding the “why” behind their actions. For instance, Syndrome, from The Incredibles, would have been a hard villain to understand if he were not given a backstory. Every action and evil crime he commits is in rebellion against Mr. Incredible, who refused to make Buddy, Syndrome’s original name, his sidekick when he was younger. Since then, he vowed to destroy all the heroes of Metroville, targeting Mr. Incredible and his family, so that he may become the greatest hero there.

Of course, there may be some villains who have deviant characteristics ingrained in them and may not have a coherent reason behind why they what they do. For example, Gaston, from Beauty and the Beast, tries desperately to swoon and win over Belle, the most beautiful girl in town, because he thinks that it is only fitting that the most dashing and handsome man be with the prettiest girl. Through his vanity and misguided reason, he creates a mob and tries killing the heinous beast that has somehow succeeded in winning over Belle’s heart, and in the end (**notice: spoiler alert**) dies in vain of a broken cause. Oh villains: we can’t live with them, but we can’t live without them.

Thought of the (Tues)day

Thought of the (Tues)day : Which villain do you think has the best evil laugh?

- Jafar from Aladdin ?

- Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians

-Ursula from The Little Mermaid ?

or Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove?
