Disney's Evolution of Villains
Earlier I wrote about how Disney is changing up the game when it comes to villains, using the movie Frozen as my primary example. Instead of typically introducing the villain at the very beginning, they are reverting to identifying the villain at the very end, leaving the audience feeling like they are in a "murder-mystery" type situation where they have to guess who the villain is until its revealed. I recently found an essay called, "The Construction of Evil - The Evolution of Disney Villains from the Golden to the Revival era", and it discusses the different types of villains that Disney has made over time and how they are all unique. The author, Angelica Ourri, focuses more heavily on the films Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and The Lion King, but she touches on Frozen (page 42-43) and talks about how Hans is apart of the "new formula" for villains and changes the game. It was an interesting read and if you are curious about specific Disney villains and how they have changed over time, I definitely recommend reading this essay!
